Counseling or psychotherapy has many benefits. The goal is to gain personal insight about our emotions and motives so we can make changes that allow us to live happier lives. A properly trained counselor uses proven interventions and techniques that promote self understanding and personal growth. His or her interventions go beyond what a well meaning friend or pastor can provide. An effective therapist should make you uncomfortable at times because the process involves pointing out unhealthy or maladaptive behaviors or thoughts that negatively effect your functioning. Therapy should always have set goals that are regularly re-evaluated with you. Therapy should not go on for extended periods without clearly defined objectives.

Yes, counseling sessions are strictly confidential. We go to extraordinary means to protect your privacy. Our prescribers and therapists only document enough personal information to remind them about you and your situation. We will not release therapy notes to anyone, including your insurance carrier, without your permission.
To further protect your privacy, notes are deliberately vague and non-specific. We may even redact or “black out” information deemed particularly sensitive. Our medical director personally reviews and approves all records and correspondence leaving the office to ensure that the highest standards of patient privacy have been met.
